"Ñawi" is a powerful  word in the language of the Andes. At first it means your "physical eyes", but as you go deeper you will see it in many places. An "Akha Ñawin" is the best of the "Chicha" fermented beverage offered in ceremonies, "Pukyu Ñawin" are the water springs in the mountains, "Llamaq Ñawin" is the eye of the sky Lama, the sacred star of Alpha Centaury. 

A "Ñawi" is then related to the concept of  "portal" a spot, a thing or a place in the world where the energy of life concentrates, is refined, and through a channel or bridge connects us to a new state of being or perceiving reality. Thus, for some masters in the Andes the "Ñawis" are also the power centers of our energy body. 

The Hampeq master from Cusco Vilma Pinedo explains: 


"Ñawis are pure and sacred centers in our subtle body. These eyes have the gift of seeing the true nature of our world".

"In the Andes when we have a problem, we speak directly with the forces of nature, the energy of the Earth, the wisdom of the mountains. So the Ñawis are eyes of power, fundamental in connecting us deeply to the beings of subtle nature and to Pachamama.

"From the 'Ruru' in the base of  our spine, all the way up to the 'Wiraqocha' above our heads', through the Ñawis we receive and give the energy of life, the healing medicine. Because when we see the world for what it really is, then it will unavoidably reflect our own true nature."

In order to keep this balance the peoples of the Andes periodically purify and nurture the Ñawis, either through personal and community rituals, offerings or sacred pilgrimage. Vilma shares:


"When we come to the presence of Pachamama and her spirits in the ceremonies, we bring our best intentions, food and drinks. The leaves, the seeds, the wine and the sweets, the flowers and the cotton, each piece is a purpose, an exchange of life and nurturing: I bring you food and I ask to be fed, I bring wine I ask you to quench my thirst, I bring cotton and I ask to be healthy."

"The same we do with the energy of our body. In our spiritual works we bring a pure Heart, asking the spirits to help us cleanse and let go of the sadness and anger we have accumulated. We bring our kind words and breath and we ask for the visions to remind us of our true path. We pour ourselves into the pilgrimages and offerings so that with our open Ñawis we receive blessings from the roots of the earth and from the light of the sky".

Ñawikuna Online Teachings

"Ñawi" is a 12 sessions Online Andean Teachings program guided by the peruvian Hampeq Vilma Pinedo. As descendant of a line of aboriginal renown Andean master healers, Vilma carries a deep and subtle wisdom of connection with the Earth and its spirits.


 After Being introduced to the energy of Vilma's lineage and land, we will meet every week to work with one of the 10 ñawis. And through stories, rituals and energy practices we will cleanse, open and strengthen them.

"This space we are opening, it's not only about learning with your head, or to see or test how far you can get. It's about making space in our Ñawis for new things to come, nurturing from the deepest sacredness in each one of us".

Vilma Pinedo

Vilma Pinedo was born surrounded by the Apus, powerful mountain spirits from Cusco, Peru. Her initiation into the path of the healer arrived before she was even born. When her mother was pregnant with her, she was struck by a lighting that almost kills them both. In the Andes this is a strong sign of being called by the spirits, that’s why from a young age the eyes of the community were set on her to learn the “curandera” way.

Vilma grew among her grandfathers and grandmothers, whom through day to day labour and sharing, taught her the traditional healing rituals. And since she was 12, she helped them, reading the energy in the coca leaves, gathering the natural elements for the healings and offerings and using her intuition to advice the patients.


She comes from a lineage of renown healers in Cusco, amongst them her father Martin Pinedo, her mother María Sanchez, her grandfather Benito Qorihuaman and her great-grandfather Melchor Deza. The latter two, made known to foreigners by the masters Don Juan Nuñez del Prado and Américo Yabar, and respected  by a world-wide community of practitioners of the Andean Spiritual Tradition.


By studying at the university, Vilma did something that was new to past generations, allowing her to learn different languages, accessing and understanding more of the western and modern mindset.


Currently, she dedicates her time to her family, to helping her community, and assisting people in their spiritual paths, their own relations, families and businesses. She works with different subtle natural energies, using the methods received from her ancestors, like the making of offerings, the use of healing plants and sacred Andean rituals. She always remarks that when she works with people it’s the their faith what gets the job done. And that each one of us knows what we truly need, it’s just up to us to open up, listen, talk, and walk the path.


Vilma has a special connection with the Apus, guardian spirits of her land and culture. Like the Apu Pachatusan, Manuel Pinta or Wiraqochan. They guide her in her works, and this is why she is considered as channel to the elders who still inhabit the high mountains in Cusco. “Sometimes you don’t see them, but they see you for sure, and they take care of you”, she says.

She loves her family and the healing ways that bring balance to our bodies and our relationship with the living earth. She was called to accompany the Dalai Lama when he visited Cusco, and she uses her gift as a tool for health, peace and unity.

Please consider it is important to be present in most of the live zoom meetings, to be able to follow the energy work that we are doing. In case you can’t attend some of the meetings, you will have the option to watch the recording and be ready for the next meeting.

The work with Vilma in these kind of programs involves listening to her teachings, performing live rituals and meditations and also being open to listening to the experiences of the group and sharing your own.

1/ Opening Ceremony

A first meeting to feel and open the energy of our work. We will do an offering asking the permission of our and Vilma's ancestors to work with the wisdom of the andes.

2/ Ruru/ The Root Ñawi.

Ruru, is the first Ñawi placed in the base of your spine.


The first seed of your harvest, the Ruru symbolizes your roots and how you connect to them. Vilma says: "A seed (ruru) has many purposes and even small seeds can bear big fruit. In the andes we say:  focus on your seed, what are your qualities and strenghts, what is your value, as a person. Because when you connect with your Ruru, you have the potential to germinate and bring life to the things around you”.

3/Qosqo / The Womb Ñawi

The Second Ñawi called Qosqo is placed around the belly button.


From there we control our vital energy, how we manage our strength in relation to ourselves and to others. The Qosqo teaches us to balance ourselves with our physical space, and control our emotional and physical energy. In Vilma's words:  "It represents your Will to live, to deal with adversity, and to have the strength to build a better world for yourself and for others".

"Sometimes we resist too much, sometimes we work too hard or go too far to prove ourselves something. And excess can hurt us. If you are too hard on yourself, so will the space be hard on you. Then you realize that maybe you need some rest. Or maybe you feel weak and need to connect to a source of strength to remind you of this balance"

4Wiksa/ The Plexus ñawi 

The third Ñawi is called Wiksa (Waist), and it's placed in the pit of your stomach. 

This Ñawi has to do with emotions that have been passed from generation to generation.

They may come in the shape of lack of love, lack of self confidence, or traumas from our ancestors; and if we don't let go they can hurt us or others.


Vilma points out: "You have unconsciously assumed so many responsibilities from your ancestors, that can create all sorts of emotions. If we leave them unattended they can cause unnecessary heat within you. So you have to balance you inner fire with the outer rays of the sun, letting its light bring a new beginning, a new reflection to heal the ancestral wounds".

5/.  Sonqo/ The Heart ñawi 

The fourth Ñawi is called Sonqo and it's placed in the center of your chest.

From this Ñawi we vibrate the intentions that will eventually become the work we do and the transformation we bring to the world around us. As the center of our being, the Sonqo is deeply connected to our fate and our trust in the process of life. That's why it's so important to keep in healthy and aware.

Vilma reminds us: "What do you do to fix what you feel is wrong? or how about when the energy is too tough with you? Sometimes you have to learn to be vulnerable, to rely in others. To do this first you have to build confidence in yourself and the Sonqo can help you here. This Ñawi invites you to use the power of Munay, the compassion, to transform the huchas".

6/.  Kunka/ The Throat Ñawi 

The fifth is the Kunka Ñawi, placed around our neck.


According to Vilma, Kunka is related to how we receive information from others and how we process it. How sensitive are you to the things you hear? You have to be able to discern your own emotions from other peoples emotions.

Vilma explains: "How we manage what we hear can make us feel happy, sad or angry. You see, here in the mountains it is uncommon to have thyroid problems. I see many people from the cities holding frustrations and grieve in this part of their bodies. It's important to let things out, and the Kunka Ñawi helps us regulating what we hear and how that makes us feel. If you learn how to listen then you will know how to speak.

7/.  Simi/ The Mouth ñawi 

Directly related to Kunka we find the seventh Ñawi "Simi", literally meaning "mouth".

Through our mouth, and like the water in a river, can flow some of our most precious gifts as humans, like our words and our breath.

"In the Andes the breath is key in all the offerings we do to Pachamama and the Apus. Samay, breath, equals to life and faith, and whenever we come to meet our ancestors through our phukuy, the blowing of the leaves, through the incense, we awaken them, we give life to what they touch."

For the andeans we must always say things being respectful to ourselves, to others and to the spirit world

8/  Qhawaq pt 1/ The Vision ñawis

In our head we also find the Qhawaq Ñawis, the three eyes that can see the shape of the visible, and also invisible, worlds.

Qhaway in quechua means "to observe, to watch, to guard something. For the masters and Vilma, a Qhawaq is the person who can see deeply through the energy of Life, and without judgement open Pachamama's Secrets.

Vilma shares: "Young children see things many of us can't see when we grow up. In the cities they teach to see the world in a way and make it small so it can fit a box. The light of life is so pure and bright and it reveals through each creation, in a much colorful or meaningful way that so many times we could sense. Children see the invisible because their Qhawaq is open and fresh, so we must become like them, clear and open this deep eye"

"But also an eye that sees too many invisible things could lead us to madness, so we have to create a balance here as in all the other ñawis."

10/.  Puqmun/ The Fontanel Ñawi

At the top of our head we find a very special Ñawi, the Puqmun (fontanel)


Vilma is very adamant when you ask her about it: "when a child is born the Puqmun is the most important place to protect, it can't be touched by others or get cold. Through the Puqmun a baby is connected with the Sacred, and receives the Sami, the blessing of the Cosmos.

Just like the andeans protect the innocence of a newborn, for us connecting with this ñawi means to connect from the purest in ourselves with our life's mission. To be reborn beyond our traumas and stories, to see the true light of life.

"With the Puqmun and Wiraqocha you have to be docile, connect with the energy in a sublime way, to be fully open to the blessings of the Apus and the Sacred places".

11/.  Wiraqocha/ The Crown Ñawi

As you become an adult, the Wiraqocha at the top of your head (along with the Puqmun) also represent this connection with what nurtures you from above.

"We are all born with a guiding star, a purpose, a medicine we receive from Pachamama. The Wiraqocha can help you remember the mistery of who you are, where you come from. And when you open yourself to the divine force of the Cosmos you can only then become a true channel between the 3 worlds.

We are Karpay, an organization based in Perú and dedicated to sharing the Andean Spiritual Wisdom. Founded by Yandy Huaranga (pshychologist) and Francisco Victoria (International Relations major) who having learnt with different original masters decided to present their work and knowledge to people from all over the world in a respectful, honest and practical way.
